THIRTEEN
JENNA
Aaron and I avoided each other for the rest of the evening, but there was an electricity between us that we couldnât deny. When he brushed up against me at the kitchen sink, a sizzle of heat ran through me. When his glances caught mine, I couldnât look away. It occurred to me that I should call Dexter, my âfriend with benefits,â to work out my sexual tension, but I knew I didnât want anyoneâs hands on me but Aaronâs. He was the only man on my mind, and the only one I wanted in my bed, whether it was a good decision or not. His words kept ringing in my head. Spend the night with me.
âTime for me to head out,â I announced around ten oâclock.
Never in my life had I left a party before everyone else, but I was too jittery to sit down, and my siblings were beginning to round up their kids anyway. Dad and Aaron were left at the picnic table on the back porch, deep in conversation about some new advancement in electric heating that would reduce the need for foreign oil. Aaron loved to talk about anything science and technology related, and I couldnât remember when I started finding that so sexy. Watching him push up his glasses and discuss the benefits of modern heat pumps had, at some point, started sounding like dirty talk.
I bent down to kiss my fatherâs cheek. âThanks for dinner, Pop.â
He checked his watch. âYouâre leaving already? You feeling alright, sweetheart?â
âIâm tired from commuting all week.â I looked over at Aaron, willing my voice to sound normal so my father wouldnât notice anything different between us. âSee you at Ms. Match?â
âYeah, Iâm filming on Thursday.â Aaron faked a yawnâthe man was a terrible actor. âActually, Iâm a little tired too. Iâll walk out with you.â He clapped a hand on Dadâs shoulder. âThank you again for a delicious dinner and congrats on a successful fryer mission.â
âSee you two later,â Dad said with a wave.
You two?
I froze, thinking Dad chose those words on purpose. Was he referring to us like we were a couple because he knew what was going on? A quick check of his expression, serene and unsuspicious as he sipped on the last of his decaf coffee, told me he was clueless. Clearly, Iâd heard his words differently in my head than heâd intended. All of this subterfuge was making me paranoid.
Aaron and I walked through the house together, stopping to give Lana a hug as she cried about having to leave Popâs house. She always had a meltdown when she was tired, and tonight was no exception. Sal gave Aaron and me a hard stare as we left the house together, and in return I waved nonchalantly and gave an award-winning performance of a woman who had nothing to hide.
Aaron followed me to my car and stood there as I opened the door. âCan I follow you to your place? Or you can come to mine.
